Sjogren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disease that attacks the salivary and the tear glands – causing a persistent dry eye condition. During a flare-up, patients may experience dry, red, and irritated eyes from a lack of adequate tear production. Treatment for dry eyes resulting from Sjogren’s Syndrome includes eye drops, medication, and in some cases eye surgery.
At this time, the effects of Sjogren’s Syndrome are irreversible but the symptoms can be managed. In many cases, artificial tears and prescription eye drops can help counteract eye inflammation and dryness caused by this condition.
Contact your primary care physician and your eye doctor to create a wellness plan to help manage flare-ups.
